A Special Winsday Giveaway: Donald S. Whitney Library

Don Whitney

We are running this Winsday Giveaway on Monday this week to allow for more entrants and to span the week of Christmas where I hope and pray y’all will be spending more time with family than your computer!

I am excited to announce this week’s Winsday Giveaway which is sponsored by NavPress, Moody Publishers, christianaudio, and Dr. Whitney himself.  We are pleased to announce that we are giving away the entire Donald S. Whitney library.  For the record, I wish we were giving away his library–there are some gems in there!

The Giveaway

Grand Prize: Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life–Study Guide, Spiritual Disciplines within the Church, How Can I be Sure I am a Christian?, Simplify Your Spiritual Life, 10 Questions to Diagnose Your Spiritual Health, and Family Worship.

Two First Prizes: Autographed copy of either Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life or Spiritual Disciplines Within the Church. The choice will be given to the first person chosen. The second name drawn for this prize will receive what the other person did not want.

Second Prize: Audiobook collection:  this contains both Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life and Family Worship.

Third Prize: Family Worship book and audio CD

Fourth Prize: Spiritual Disciplines Within the Church

We will have a total of five winners with this drawing. Because there are so many chances to win a prize, I am going to extend this drawing over a 14-day period rather than the usual 6-day period.  That, and it is Christmas!

Wow – that’s quite the prize pack. We went through Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life as a SS class a while back and it was really helpful. Admittedly, we went slowly, but it was challenging and helped us see areas where we could improve our walk. I’m currently going through it again via the ChristianAudio.com mp3s. I enjoyed Family Worship, but need to give that one another read and start applying it for our family. That’s very challenging for me.

Thank you, Dr. Whitney. You’ve challenged me and helped me to grow.

I have wanted to read Dr. Whitney’s books for a while. I am grateful for the opportunity to win some of them! Thank you!

I’m unfamiliar with Whitney’s work, but I’m very interested in reading his resources for Christian discipline. My husband would be particularly interested in the audio books.

I have used Dr. Whitney’s materials on several occasions as a pastor and have been blessed greatly through them. I pray that his ministry will continue to impact the church and build the kingdom.

This comment was emailed to me. I have permission to share it.

I was chairman of Deacons and on the search committee that called a young Donnie Whitney to Pastor the Glenfield Baptist Church in Glen Ellen, Il., where he served over a decade. He has grown and blossomed into a beautiful and faithful servant to our Lord Jesus Christ. Have a Merry CHRISTmas !!!!

I’ve read Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life and it was a very challenging and edifying read. I would love to read more of Dr Whitney’s work.

Thank you and God bless you.

Don Whitney’s works are simple and yet profound. They are theological yet practical. They are for the individual and for the congregation. They reflect on the past and yet are relevant to the present. I always walk away from his works motivated to walk closer to the Lord in a practical and disciplined manner. Our church has profited from his teaching ministry to our missionaries and highly recommend both his books and seminar ministry.

Dr. Whitney’s books and ministry have been crucial for my personal growth as a disciple and as a disciple maker. I turn to Dr. Whitney’s books over and over again in my ministry. Thanks for all you do for the kingdom.

Dr. Whitney’s books and sermons have been a huge blessing to me over the years as I have grown in my Christian walk. I remember his sermon on hell given at a Louisville crusade being especially powerful and I turn to his books time and time again for a good, solid dose of unvarnished Christianity. His wife’s illustrations are a blessing to me as well. I was even encouraged to see him playing baseball on the Seminary lawn at SBTS one sunny afternoon and to hear about his blueberry patch. Reminders like this help me remember that there are no “superstars” in the Christian life. Thanks!

I have been exposed to Whitney’s work primarily through his website and newsletter. I have enjoyed his lists and bulletin inserts, and have wanted to explore further into his books. This give away is exciting as it would give me the opportunity to do exactly that.

    5 entries:
    1) I am not very family with Whitney’s work, but I just started looking around his website. My wife does our church bulletin, and I frequently add inserts, so those will surely be a blessing. Just from reading the titles of his work, I can tell that his ministry will be a blessing in the future.
    2) I subscribed to the RSS feed for the first time via Google Reader
    3) I Blogged: http://blog.witnessesuntome.com/2009/12/win-donald-s-whitney-library.html
    4) I am a new Facebook fan: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Christian-Book-Notes/163761649238

I was in the middle of Ten Questions to Diagnose Your Spiritual Health and stopped dead in my tracks at chapter 3 on loving. I was sorely convicted about wanting to be loved when I got to the end-of-chapter question on my willingness to love even if I will not receive it in return.

Also, I have used and passed along to another church the 10 questions for people attending a conference!

I have appreciated Dr. Whitney’s work over the years, including many of his free resources on his website. I also made great use of his “Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life” for an adult elective that I taught at my last church. I would love to add more of Dr. Whitney’s resources to my library.

Dr. Whitney has spoken in our church and we have gone through Ten Questions to Diagnose Your Spiritual Health in our small groups. What a fantastic little book – it is convicting, challenging and practical. It’s one of those books you should go back to time and again for a little push in the right direction. I also love his Questions to Ask at the Start of a New Year.

Facebook, and comment. Spiritual Disciples is a GREAT book to understand spiritual disciplines in a way that is reverent yet accessible. Presented them in a way that made me thing, “yea, I can do this. Thank you Jesus!”

I sat in Dr. Whitney’s Spiritual Discipline’s class at SBTS. It was a refreshing and convicting combination of reformed theology and practical theology. I was challenged by Dr. whitney’s character and faithfulness and will never forget the assignment of four hours of silence and solitude. Thank you sir.

Thanks for making such quality resources available, especially in a day of much spiritual fluff. One of my goals for 2010 is to read (and reread as J.I. Packer suggests)and apply “Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life.” We’re making it the book of the month for January in our church. May God continue to bless and use you exceedingly (Ephesians 3:20-21).

We taught “Spiritual Disciplines within the Church” a couple of years ago and our people, most of whom had very shallow teaching on the church for most of their lives, were greatly impacted by this book. We are indebted to Dr. Whitney for his teaching/writing!

I took Personal Spiritual Disciplines @ SBTS this past semester. It was taught by Jason Allen from Dr. Whitney’s notes. I was challenged by many of the disciplines, but most affected by Cody McNutt, encouraging the student’s to use their gifts while @ seminary. Was also convicted to do Fasting on a regular basis, and taught how to do four hours of silence and solitude….

I used Whitney’s books while in seminary and they both were so simple and practical yet so powerful. I will put them into use when I become a pastor, hopefully soon. Thank you, Jesus, for putting these messages into this man!

I had Dr. Whitney in my first semester of seminary at SBTS. The lecture on praying through Scripture was enough to change my spiritual life, not to mention the class as a whole. Thanks, Dr. Whitney and many blessings!

Don’s free bulletin inserts have been helpful to our church. His writings on family worship are worth reading.

I read Dr. Whitney’s book “The Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life” in my Spiritual Formations class in Bible College. Changed what I thought and did with the spiritual disciplines. I am currently using it as a framework to teach my youth ministry about the spiritual disciplines.

I have read and taught both Personal Disciplines and Church Disciplines. I know several young pastors who have studied under Dr. Whitney in seminary and see the quality of their spiritual life attribitued to the study of this material.

I’ve read 10 Questions to Diagnose Your Spiritual Health, How Can I Be Sure I’m A Christian, and read part of How to Simplify Your Spiritual Life. Each book brought my attention back to Christ and encouraged my soul. The practical questions and application that he uses is very helpful.

I have read Family Worship and 10 Questions to Diagnose Your Spiritual Health. 10 Questions has become a must read for everyone in my family and especially my children.

I’m really surprised this giveaway didn’t have more entrants!! I don’t have a lot of experience with Dr. Whitney’s materials myself and would have thought lots of people would have wanted the opportunity to learn more about his doctrinal thoughts.

We had a total of 130+ entrants, the winners have been contacted and I am awaiting one more response before announcing who won. At this point, I am still a small-guy in a vast cyber-sea of book reviewers.
