My Little Bible Board Book by Christina Goodings

Goodings, Christina. My Little Bible Board Book, illustrated by Melanie Mitchell. Intercourse: Good Books, 2008. 40 pp. $9.99.  Purchase at Amazon.

I am usually not a big fan of Christian board books.  When my youngest son received this book for his dedication, I admit that I groaned inwardly–until I read it to him.  What I read was exciting.  I quickly decided that other parents needed to know about this book which is why I am writing a review on a board book!

About the Publisher

Good Books is a publishing company owned and operated by Merle and Phyllis Good, thus the company name, Good Books.  However, that is not just a play on words.  They strive to publish quality books for families.  I was surprised to learn how many books my family owned that was published by Good Books.  The catch is, those books are all cookbooks!  They have published a series of Fix-It and Forget-It and Fix-It and Enjoy-It cookbooks.  They have a series of books on quilting among other books. The section I am currently most interested in is their children’s books.  As can be seen, they have a wide variety of books that appeal to the whole family.

Overview

This book covers creation, the Fall, the flood, God’s covenant with Abraham, Moses and the 10 Commandments, Jericho, David and Goliath, Solomon’s dedication of the temple, Daniel and the Lion’s Den, and the return from exile by the Israelites in the Old Testament.

The New Testament topics include the birth of Jesus, Jesus as a boy, Jesus being baptized by John the Baptist, the parable of the mustard seed and the lost sheep, the Lord’s prayer, the raising of Jairus’ daughter, Jesus and the children, the Last Supper, and even discusses Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection.

Recommendation

While most board books cover stories like Daniel and the lion’s den and David and Goliath and the birth of Jesus, what other board book covers the Israelites return from exile?  Have you ever read a children’s board book that even hints at the crucifixion?  What is more, the book of the Bible and the chapter is included after each story.  After reading countless Christian board books to my three sons, I have finally found one that begins to lay the foundation of great doctrinal truths like the Fall and God being a covenantal God.

If you enjoy reading to your children, especially when they are under 18  months old, then you need to buy this book.  This little board book would be a perfect compliment to your family worship time or make a great gift to a baby being dedicated to the Lord.
