Klusendorf, Scott L. The Case for Life. Wheaton: Crossway Books, 2009. 254 pp. $15.99. Purchase at Westminster Books for $10.55.
The Case for Life is divided into four parts leading the reader from an overview of the topic of abortion to pin-pointed concerns and objections faced in discussions about abortion. Part 1 clarifies the debate to keep “the main thing, the main thing.” It is easy to get side-tracked and never actually deal with the fact that the unborn baby is in all actuality a human being. Part 2 helps the pro-life advocate to establish a firm foundation for the debate.
Part 3 begins to delve deep into the heart of the debates. Here Klusendorf teaches the reader to answer the “hard” individual objections in a persuasive manner. He deals with objections like “Women will die from illegal abortions,” “You shouldn’t force your views on others,” and “It’s my body, I’ll decide” among others. Part 4 is an encouragement to all to better teach and equip those who are pro-life.
Scott Klusendorf has brought to the “everyday” Christian an easy to read manual that will certainly equip them to better stand there ground when engaged by those who are pro-choice (I say pro-death, but that is just my personal view). Pastors should read this valuable resource and make it available to everyone in their congregation. With the review questions at the end of each chapter, this resource can be used in small group studies as well as in homeschooling situations. Parents would do well to read this book and lead their children through the discussion questions. Doing so will enable them to understand the arguments for the pro-life view and to be equipped to debunk the arguments of the other side. May God bless the writing and reading of this book.
