Preaching & Preachers: 40th Anniversary Edition by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, edited by Kevin DeYoung

February 1st, 2012 No comments

Lloyd-Jones, D. Martyn.  Preaching & Preachers: 40th Anniversary Edition.  Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2011.  352 pp.  $22.99.  Purchase at Westminster for much less.

Introduction/Summary

Preaching & Preachers is undoubtedly the greatest book to be published on preaching in the last 40 years.  Martyn Lloyd-Jones lectured on this subject at Westminster Theological Seminary back in the Spring of 1969.  They have been influencing pastors ever since.

The original book was published in 1972 and has gone through numerous editions (nothing has changed in the text since 1972).  This latest edition is the 40th anniversary “deluxe” edition.

In this edition, Kevin DeYoung serves as editor.  Most importantly, the text has remained the same.  What has been added are essays from Bryan Chapell, Mark Dever, Kevin DeYoung, Ligon Duncan, Timothy Keller, and John Piper.  DeYoung also included subheadings in the chapters to help the modern reader.

Review

There is nothing that can be said about the text of Preaching and Preachers that has not already been said.  After only 40 years, it is truly a modern-day classic on the subject of preaching.  Some will agree with what the Doctor said and some will disagree.  Regardless, what you will discover is that ML-J was passionate about this one subject more than anything else he ever discussed.

The essays that are sprinkled throughout this anniversary edition are of immense help.  These essays are akin to asking some of today’s most noted preachers why and how Preaching and Preachers helped them in their ministry.

What is more, you will discover that this is not a book that will be read once and put back on the shelf.  Its impact will long-lasting and invaluable to the young man seeking to become a preacher.  As you return to it through the years (as I have in only the past 5 years), you will find yourself saying “So, that was where I arrived at that conclusion” or “That is where this idea originated.”

The essays and subheadings only add to the nature and usefulness of this invaluable resource for pastors.

Recommendation

This work is a must read for all who are set apart to be preachers of the gospel whether in a local church setting or as a missionary or evangelist.  While written to the pastor in the pulpit, its value will far exceed just the local pulpit.  This will be a foundational book, I pray, for future generations of preaching.  Preaching and Preachers is an excellent book to give to a young man considering the ministry or who was just licensed or ordained.

Born of God by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

January 20th, 2012 No comments

Lloyd-Jones, D. Martyn.  Born of God: Sermons from John, Chapter One.  Edinburgh: The Banner of Truth Trust, 2011.  482 pp.  $29.00.  Purchase at Westminster for much less.

Introduction

Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) is well known by many in the Reformed circles of Christianity. This is because of his love for the Puritans and his deep exegetical and expository style of preaching.  My prayer is that he would be well known throughout all of Christendom. He has much to offer today’s Christian. You can download sermons for free at OnePlace.com. I highly recommend you check out that website.

Summary

Born of God is a 32 sermon compilation of messages delivered by the late Dr. Lloyd-Jones as part of his last sermon series preached on Sunday mornings at Westminster Chapel.  He started preaching through John in 1962 but health prevented him from ever finishing.  Another lengthy treatment from the Gospel of John is found in his work entitled Living Water which I reviewed here.

In this particular work, the Doctor concentrates on two doctrines found in the first chapter of the beloved disciple’s gospel: Law and Grace and the assurance of salvation.  He began the series with the comment, “Do you know what is the matter with us?  I will tell you.  We none of us really believe in the Lord Jesus Christ!”  From there he explains what he means and shows with pinpoint accuracy how this is truly the case for most believers in Jesus Christ.

Review

With his warning shot fired, Martyn Lloyd-Jones shows how we need to better grasp the doctrines we believe and allow them to have the desired effect in and on 0ur lives.  What is better is his continuous pointing back to Christ in all that he says.

Chapter fifteen is an excellent chapter in that he lays out in plain language how we become children of God.  In my personal estimation, it is one of his more articulate evangelical sermons we have.  Chapters 21-25 are of great value in and of themselves as they explain the importance of mortifying (killing) sin within you.

After reading Born of God, you will have a far greater understanding and appreciation for the first chapter of the Gospel of John.

Recommendation

As with all of the materials by and about Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, I highly recommend this compilation of sermons.  I do not hide the truth that he has been most influential on my ministry and in my walk with the Lord.  If you have never read anything by the Doctor, then start here with Born of God and be blessed.  You will also be “hooked” so to speak on the ministry of the greatest preacher of the 20th century.

Ephesians Sermon Series by Martyn Lloyd-Jones

January 9th, 2012 1 comment

This is from an email I receive weekly from the MLJ Trust about the Ephesians sermon series now being available week by week for free.  It will take about 4 years to publish the whole series, but will certainly be worth the wait!

Dear Friend,
This is a day that all of us, in the UK and the US, having been looking forward to with great anticipation. This morning, on the MLJ Trust’s page on Oneplace, we are launching the full series preached by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones on the book of Ephesians. This series of over 200 sermons was started by Dr. Lloyd-Jones in 1954, and became one of four prolonged treatments of New Testament books that he undertook during his 30 year ministry at Westminster Chapel.

The launch of this series of full sermons comes after 92% of you, in a survey conducted in late 2011, said that you would prefer a full-length sermon format to the shorter format we have been using, which means that the length of these sermons will vary between 45 and 60 minutes. We are extremely grateful to our brothers on the UK Recordings Trust for giving us permission to air full-length sermons, and to Oneplace for allowing us to upload longer content than they are used to.

Today’s sermon is an introduction to the Epistle, and you can go straight to the sermon by either clicking on the Oneplace logo beneath my signature below or clicking on the following link: http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/living-grace . We do hope that you will enjoy this series and, more importantly, we hope that it will be helpful to you in your Spiritual journey.
To those who have been able to donate to our ministry, we thank you so much. For those who have not had an opportunity, but would like to help us continue funding this ministry, a link to our donations page is at the bottom left of this eMail (Your GeoTrust secured contribution will be processed by Network for Good). As a reminder, the MLJ Trust is 501 (c) (3) charitable consisting of four Board members who volunteer their time, and no staff. You can learn more about us at www.mljtrust.org.
As always, we only want to be sending these eMails to friends of the ministry who want to receive them, and so if you would prefer not to receive them, simply click on the “unsubscribe” link below and you will be removed from this eMail list.

Thank you again for your interest in the Ministry of Martyn Lloyd-Jones!

Interview: Parts 4 & 5 Elizabeth Catherwood (Daughter of Martyn Lloyd-Jones)

August 2nd, 2011 No comments

Dear Friend,

We wanted you to know that Parts 4 and 5 of the interview with Elizabeth Catherwood, oldest daughter of Martyn Lloyd-Jones, are now available on Vimeo at the links at the bottom of this eMail.

Please know that we are aware of the difficulties some folks have had in understanding the audio. The recording was done at the Catherwood’s church during an evening service, rather than in a studio, and so it can be tricky to follow in parts (particularly with the accents and the voice speed of the interviewee), but we thought it would be a shame not to put the interview segments out there, particularly as today’s segments cover the Westminster Chapel years (nearly all the Oneplace sermons come from this 30 year period) and Dr. Lloyd-Jones’s “retirement” years (!), when he spent a great deal of time on the formation of ministries that still exist today such as The International Fellowship of Evangelical Students.

Thank you, as always, for your interest in this ministry, and we hope that you will find these interview segments interesting.

Interview: Part 3 Elizabeth Catherwood (Daughter of Martyn Lloyd-Jones)

July 26th, 2011 No comments

Dear Friend,
We just wanted to let you know that the 3rd part of the interview with Elizabeth Catherwood (Dr. Lloyd-Jones’s elder daughter) is now available on Vimeo at the link below. This interview segment covers Dr. Lloyd-Jones’s ministry at his first church in Aberavon, where he spent 11 years.

One technical note I should share with you is that some people have been having difficulties with the video links. Vimeo provides superior sound synchronization, but unfortunately it does not appear to be usable on mobile devices (unlike YouTube), so our apologies to those of you who were frustrated in your attempts to view the video that way.

You can go directly to the video through the following link: http://www.vimeo.com/26619485.

Interview Pt. 2: Elizabeth Catherwood (Daughter of Martyn Lloyd-Jones

July 14th, 2011 No comments

We thought that some of you might be interest in seeing the second part of the recent interview conducted by Julian Hardyman, minister of Eden Baptist Chapel in Cambridge, England, with Elizabeth Catherwood, the older of Dr. Lloyd-Jones’s two daughters, on the life of her father. In this segment she covers Dr. Lloyd-Jones time in London as a medical student and then Harley Street doctor.

Interview: Elizabeth Catherwood (daughter of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones)

July 7th, 2011 No comments

Dear Friend,

We wanted to let you know that the Martyn Lloyd-Jones Trust in the UK recently recorded a video interview with Elizabeth Catherwood (eldest daughter of Martyn Lloyd-Jones) about the life and times of her father, in order to mark the 30th anniversary of his passing on in into glory. The inteviewer is Julian Hardyman, the minister of Eden Baptist Chapel in Cambridge, England.

Due to the length of the interview, it has been broken into 5 separate segments, each of which will be posted on a weekly basis in July. This first part deals with Dr. Lloyd-Jones’s early life in Wales. We do hope that you find these interview segments to be interesting.

To those who have been able to donate to our ministry, we thank you so much. For those who have not had an opportunity, but would like to help us continue funding this ministry, a link to our donations page is at the bottom left of this eMail (Your GeoTrust secured contribution will be processed by Network for Good). Spiritual Depression by Martyn Lloyd-Jones

May 6th, 2011 1 comment

Lloyd-Jones, Martyn.  Spiritual Depression: It’s Causes and Cure.  (Hardback) Hannibal: Granted Ministries Press, 2011.  306 pp.  $22.00.  Purchase at Granted Ministries.

Introduction

If you are a regular reader of Christian Book Notes, then you will know two things that pertain to this review.  First, I am a HUGE fan of Martyn Lloyd-Jones and have reviewed a couple of his books and have interviewed one of his grandsons, Jonathan Catherwood.  You can find all of that information here. The second thing you may know is that I am currently reading through all of ML-J’s works as my “reading for pleasure” time each day.  Granted, I am reviewing what I read, but I am reading these because I want to.

When I discovered that this hardback edition of Spiritual Depression was being published by Granted Ministries Press, I was most excited.  First, I prefer a hardback over a paperback any day of the week.  Second, this edition was coming complete with the 24-sermon mp3 included!  So, without further ado, here is the review.

Summary

The book is comprised of 21 chapters and is arranged beginning with the general consideration and ending with the final cure.  Through various passages of Scripture ML-J offers a systematic theology to a very common problem in the church today–that of depression.  As any trained surgeon would do, the Doctor begins with a basic diagnosis and then looks at the real issues at the root of depression.

From that foundation, he walks us through a myriad of possibilities of causes from the process of coming to faith to regrets from your past.  He looks closely at the spirit of bondage and the problem of false teachings (rampant) in the church.  You will be introduced to discipline in the church and in your walk with Christ as well as being taught how to react properly to trials and chastening.

An addition to the hardback edition that is not found in the paperback is the mini-biography written by Geoff Thomas–a personal friend of ML-J’s. In this bio, Thomas seeks to answer the question about why ML-J was so well-equipped to write on a subject such as depression. He offers 8 reasons as to why. What is not shared, and this is of no real fault of Thomas’, is that ML-J had wrestled with depression off and on throughout his ministry. Most notably was in 1949. This information can be found in the 2nd volume of Iain Murray’s biography on ML-J entitled The Fight of Faith.

The mp3 CD includes three extra sermons that did not make it into the book.  Unfortunately, I was not able to listen to the sermons and find them in the book.  Suffice it to say that the sermon order on the CD is not the same as the chapter order in the book.  Below, you will see the sermon titles as they occur on the CD:
1. General Consideration – Psalm 42:5-11
2. Mind, Heart and Will – Romans 6:17
3. That One Sin – 1 Timothy 1:16
4. Vain Regrets – 1 Corinthians 15:8-10
5. Fear of the Future – 2 Timothy 1:7
6. Feelings – 2 Timothy 1:6
7. Labourers in the Vineyard – Matthew 20:1-16
8. Where is Your Faith? – Luke 8:22-25
9. Looking at the Waves – Matthew 14:22-23
10. The Spirit of Bondage – Romans 8:15-17
11. That Your Joy May be Full – Ephesians 3:14-20
12. Dead to Sin – Romans 6:1-2
13. Alive unto God – Romans 6:5-8
14. The Danger of Error – Colossians 2:8
15. Spiritual Depression – Romans 6:14
16. Be Strong in The Lord – Ephesians 6:10-11
17. The Whole Armour of God – Ephesians 6:13-15
18. The Shield, Helmet and Sword – Ephesians 6:16-17
19. Praying Always – Ephesians 6:18
20. Praying in The Spirit – Ephesians 6:18
21. False Teaching – Galatians 4:15
22. Weary in Well Doing – Galatians 6:9
23. Discipline – 2 Peter 1:5-7
24. Trials – 1 Peter 1:6-7

Review

What can be said about this book that has not already been said? With careful attention to what the Christian really needs, ML-J deftly uses his scalpel to cut through the psycho-babble and get at the heart of the issue. It always seems to go back to the depravity of man though sometimes it is for our own sanctification and discipline.

Lloyd-Jones points out the reality that some people are more likely to suffer from depression just because of their makeup as being more introspective than not. That was a watershed moment for me as I personally have discovered that I can fall into something I would call depression (though nothing psychological). Ultimately, the advice that will be found is to look to Jesus who is the founder and perfecter of our faith. Only with your eyes on Christ will you be able to overcome the bouts of depression that are likely to ensue as you face the challenges of life.

Recommendation

Ok, you can purchase the paperback for $12.00. You can purchase the mp3 CD for $37.00. You can purchase both for $49.00 plus shipping and handling from probably different ministries. Or, you can purchase the hardback edition with the same exact text as the paperback that comes with the mp3 CD for $22.00 from Granted Ministries. It is honestly a no-brainer.

This particular book on depression has been helping believers wrestle and overcome this sometimes crippling adversary for fifty years because of its basis on Scripture. If you have never been introduced to ML-J, then you should allow this to be your introduction. I promise, you will read this book and loan it out (or buy it for others!) on a regular basis.

We’re excited about this latest book from Granted Ministries Press!

As you know, we do our level best to bring you resources that can truly help you. And we think this is one of the most helpful books for several groups of Christians:

1) those who struggle with joy in the Christian life: the reason the author wrote the book was to combat this issue of joylessness. It has done just that throughout the last 45 years. It is as fresh and helpful today as it ever was. The book is full of invigorating truth and real, practical help from the Scripture about how to fight for joy in the Christian life.
2) those who do any sort of counseling with Christians: in any kind of work, one of the most helpful ways to learn is to sit alongside a veteran master and simply learn by watching him at his craft. Lloyd-Jones was one of the most trusted and sought-after counselors of his day. His wisdom and approach create a model from which we all can learn.
3) those who minister the Word, or who aim to do so: one of the best ways to learn to preach is to listen to great preachers; not to steal their style or emulate their way of speaking, but to learn from their method and manner of applying the Word of God.
4) those desiring to more deeply apply the truths of Scripture: Spiritual Depression is simply one of the most remarkable books we have read. As Conrad Mbewe mentioned in a recent video interview, the way in which the Bible is applied to the emotional and psychological issues that Christians face is simply eye-opening to many. Most of the people we know who have read this book were helped in far more areas than “depression.” George Verwer calls it something of a “manual for the Christian life.”

*Due to contractual limitations this book is offered exclusively on two websites in the USA. grantedministries.org and mlj-usa.org Outside of the USA, the book is available from Granted Ministries Press through your local Christian bookstore.

Merry Christmas

December 24th, 2010 No comments

As you gather around your Christmas Tree this morning and unwrap presents, remember the greatest present ever given to man–Jesus Christ. Confess your sins in repentance and put your faith in Him and you will receive the only present that matters!

Merry Christmas

The difference between the non-Christian and the Christian is the difference between a Christmas tree on which people hang presents, and a living tree that bears fruit. They have to put them on the Christmas tree; it does not and cannot produce anything. But in the case of the growing tree it produces fruit. The fruit is no longer imposed from outside; it is something produced from the life, the sap and the power that are in the living tree.
